Here at Te Awa Māori, we are passionate, experienced and caring providers of personal and professional education in Te reo, Tikanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Manaakitanga ‘respect and care’ is at the forefront of our services.

Te Awa is the name of our whānau on our mother’s side. Te Awa means ‘the river’ – this metaphor is used in our resources. Our students launch their waka onto the awa to take an intrepid learning journey with us. From beginners through to intermediate, our services provide the manaakitanga and experience required to help our students reach their learning destination.

Most importantly we aim to bring the fun back into learning!

About Us

Ko Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, Rangitāne me Ngāpuhi ō mātou nei iwi.
Kelly Keane-Tuala is the founder, director and senior facilitator at Te Awa Māori. Kelly is co-creator of Kupu o te Rā and has more than 15 years lecturing experience at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington.

Te Awa Māori have been teaching te reo online since 2009 and are also the preferred provider for Waka Kotahi and Manatū Hauora for Māori Professional Development.

We also provide translation services and only use translators who are recognised by the National Translators’ and Interpreters’ Register at Te Taura Whiri i te reo Māori.

Hā o te Rā: The daily breath of te reo
Beginners-Intermediate

Whakarewaina tōu waka ‘ Launch your waka’ and reach your language learning destination.
Te Waka Tīwai Beginners and Te Waka Tētē Intermediate, have been fashioned as a vehicle to transport you; the hoe ‘paddles’ give you autonomy to head in your own direction. We equip you with interactive resources and techniques so that you are on a continual language learning journey.

Style: Facilitated via live Zoom group sessions online; videos; optional whānau groups; assessments and personal accountability sessions to keep you on track.

Objectives: Vocabulary learning (relevant to you), sentence building, listening comprehension, written communication and most importantly, conversational practice. Karakia and waiata are included in the course learning objectives.

Can’t make the live sessions? No problem. We will provide you with recordings of the live session you missed.

Te Waka Tīwai: Te reo Absolute Beginners Level 1

Te Waka Tīwai Level 1 (10 weeks) 29 April – 01 July 2024 – 11 April 2024 10:30am-11:50am. $402.50 incl gst NZD
“This course includes a 30 minute guided conversational class each week. The times will be made available upon completed registration”

Learn how to:

  • pronounce words and phrases with confidence and accuracy
  • introduce yourself and others
  • describe people and things
  • use words referring to people (pronouns)
  • count and tell time
  • tell people where things are located and who has them
  • say what you’re doing and where you’re going
  • say who owns something/will own something
  • use the ‘a’ and ‘o’ category correctly

Learn and apply words best suited to your own personal everyday language environment eg. home / marae / school / specific work environments (healthcare /hospitality / government agencies etc).

Te Waka Tīwai: Te reo Beginners Level 2

Te Waka Tīwai Level 2 (10 weeks) 29 April 2024 – 1 July 2024. 12pm-1:20pm. $402.50 incl gst NZD


Learn how to:

  • extend on the sentences from Level 1
  • talk about possession/ownership
  • use time phrases
  • give commands
  • say who owns/will own something
  • express likes and dislikes
  • use relevant idiomatic expressions.

Learn and apply words best suited to your own personal everyday language environment eg. home / marae / school / specific work environments (healthcare /hospitality / government agencies/ tertiary institutions etc).

Te Waka Tētē: Te reo Intermediate Level 3
Learn how to:

  • use the markers ‘i’ and ‘ki’ properly in verbal sentences
  • say ‘something was/is/will be done by someone/something’ aka passives
  • make comparisons between people/things
  • emphasise who did or will do something aka agent emphatics
  • express the state of something aka statives (using words like ‘mutu’, ‘oti’, ‘pau’, etc).

Cultural Awareness Course

  • Te reo and Tikanga: Beginners – Intermediate

Be prepared to take a journey that will open your eyes, awaken your wairua ‘spirit’ andconnect your manawa ‘heart and soul’ to the whenua ‘land’ and its people.
Learn:
Pronunciation
Mihimihi ‘greetings’, an introduction of oneself in te reo and how to greet others both formally and informally
Whakapapa ‘the importance of connection through relationships’
Tikanga ‘customary principles’ that underpin culture and relationships
Kawa ‘how things are done’ and Māori legend and tradition (why things are done) in
te ao Māori ‘the Māori world’.

  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi:

An introduction to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Learn about the significance of
He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tirene: the Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand and thecircumstances that led to the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We look at the aftermathand what it means to us today.
